Ras Al Khaimah, more often referred to as RAK, is a hidden gem in the UAE that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and memorable experiences. The northernmost emirate is known for its gulf beaches and cultural heritage, and Ras Al Khaimah provides a range of activities and experiences for every kind of traveller. It’s a perfect staycation spot for UAE residents looking for something a little bit different without having to hop on a long-haul flight.

At DW Travel we’re proud to be your specialists in bespoke travel – so we’re excited to present a curated list of the top things to do in Ras Al Khaimah, the ideal spot for UAE residents seeking something new and exciting.

Jebel Jais

RAK is well-known as a hiking hotspot – and there’s plenty of hiking opportunities around Jebel Jais. It’s the tallest mountain in the UAE, standing proudly at 1,934 meters and with some of the most breathtaking views in the region. A trip to Ras Al Khaimah wouldn’t be complete without visiting this stunning mountain.

Whether you prefer a peaceful walk along some of the easier trails at the mountain’s base, tackling one of the more challenging hiking routes, or heading to the summit for adrenaline-filled activities like sledding or rock climbing, Jebel Jais has something for everyone.

Jais Flight zipline

For thrill-seekers, the Jais Flight is the world’s longest zip line, offering an exhilarating ride that stretches for over 2.8 kilometres. You’ll zip across valleys and experience incredible views for a truly once-in-a-life time experience.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for a more sedate day, take a scenic drive to the summit, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the rugged mountains and lush valleys below. After all of the excitement, refuel at the highest restaurant in the UAE, named for how many metres it sits above sea level: 1484 by Puro. It’s a sleek restaurant with unbeatable ambience and views, and both the food and service come well-recommended.

Al Hamra village

For a more relaxed day out, Al Hamra Village is a charming coastal destination that offers a mix of shopping, dining, and relaxation. The picturesque village is home to stunning resorts, private beaches, and beautiful villas. Whether you want to stroll along the marina, enjoy water sports, or simply unwind at one of the luxury resorts, Al Hamra Village is perfect for a leisurely day.

Al Hamra Mall

Adjacent to the village is Al Hamra Mall, one of the most popular shopping destinations in RAK. A refined and chic shopping experience, Al Hamra Mall offers everything from high-end brands to local boutiques. If you’re visiting RAK with family, why not drop the kids off for a day of fun at the one-of-a-kind arts and hobby centre Kidz Factory and enjoy a peaceful shopping experience - grab a bite to eat in the lovely Central Atrium, or even catch the latest blockbuster at the 8-screen cinema.

Al Hamra heritage village

If you’re looking for a bit of history while you’re here, you can also head out to Al Jazeera Al Hamra Heritage Village – a now-abandoned and uninhabited traditional town, which gives a unique snapshot of what life in the UAE once looked like.

The National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is unique as one of the few places that has been continuously inhabited throughout its history, with evidence of trading civilisations since 5000 BC. The National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah provides a wonderfully curated look at the region’s history. Housed in a historic fort that dates back to the 18th century, the museum show cases archaeological artifacts, ancient manuscripts, and fascinating items on display.

The highlight for most visitors is the unique tour, given by a local guide – these tours are full of insights and unique stories about the region and the fort’s history. Don’t miss the room of traditional Emirati jewellery, exhibited alongside personal stories from the people who gifted these items to the museum - a must-visit for anyone interested in understanding the cultural heritage of Ras Al Khaimah.

Al Marjan Island

Al Marjan Island, a man-made archipelago in Al Hamra, is a little slice of paradise, just under an hour from Dubai. It’s quieter and less frantic than Dubai can sometimes be, and locals regard it as a bit of a hidden gem.

That’s not to say that it’s boring here at Al Marjan – quite the opposite, in fact. It’s the definitive destination for water sports enthusiasts, thanks to the crystal-clear waters. With a range of resorts offering private beaches, the island is ideal for activities such as jet skiing, parasailing, paddleboarding, and kayaking.

Dining in Al Marjan

If you prefer a more relaxed experience, the island’s luxurious resorts offer beachside relaxation with world-class amenities. We’d recommend Asian cuisine at Sanchaya in the DoubleTree by Hilton on the main boulevard, or Zaitouna House for Mediterranean and Lebanese cuisine with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Wherever you choose to relax and dine, the beautiful sunsets over the water can’t be beaten, making it an ideal spot for couples and families alike.

Take a desert safari

While the concept of a desert safari won’t be unfamiliar to UAE residents, It’s one of the top activities to really step outside of the ordinary for a little while – and for a true taste of the region’s beauty, a desert safari in Ras Al Khaimah is an absolute must.

Venture into the vast golden dunes for a thrilling ride that combines dune bashing, camel trekking, and sandboarding. After an action-packed adventure, you’ll relax in a traditional Bedouin-style camp, where you can enjoy a delicious barbecue dinner under the stars.

The best tours offer a more immersive experience that connects you to the heritage of the UAE, with many offering fire shows, henna painting, traditional Arabic coffee and more – with plenty of photo opportunities out in the stunning sands. A safari not your speed? Then a hot-air balloon ride is also a dreamy, romantic way to see the natural beauty of the dunes at a slightly slower pace, with a guided tour from high in the sky.

Relax at a five-star hotel

Sometimes, a vacation is all about relaxation, and there are plenty of amazing five-star hotels for you to enjoy some downtime. If you’re looking for luxury and tranquillity, then look at some options like Anantara Mina Resort, the Waldorf Astoria, or the InterContinental - all of which boast naturally stunning views, world-class dining, and – best of all -dedicated spas.

Lounge by the pool or the beach and enjoy a refreshing mocktail, before you indulge in signature treatments like the Waldorf’s herbal sauna, or Anantara’s Yam Khang fire therapy, then sit down for an exquisite meal at one of RAK’s top-rated restaurants, like Levant & Nar or Saffar at the InterContinental, or Azure at the Waldorf Astoria.

If you’re visiting RAK with your partner, make sure to look into couple’s treatments ahead of time for his-and-hers treatments or perhaps a decadent hot tub experience for two. If you’re looking to genuinely relax and enjoy some time off, then make sure you pamper yourself in style while staying in Ras Al Khaimah.

The Dhayah Fort

For history buffs, the Dhayah Fort is an important landmark in Ras Al Khaimah, and it’s been nominated to become an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located on a hilltop, the fort offers panoramic views of the surrounding date palm farms, mountains, and the sea. Built in the 16th century, the fort was once a defensive stronghold and is a symbol of the region’s resistance during the colonial period.

The fort has been beautifully preserved, and visitors can take a guided tour to learn about its history and significance. The hike up to the fort is rewarding, with stunning views at the top making it a perfect spot for photos.

Wadi Shawka

If you’re looking to relax and unwind in nature while staying in RAK, then Wadi Shawka is the perfect destination. This scenic valley is perfect for hiking, picnicking, and exploring nature. The area is known for its diverse flora and fauna, and visitors can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Wadi Shawka Dam

The Wadi Shawka Dam is an excellent spot for those who love being outdoors, providing a peaceful setting for a relaxing day amidst nature. The area also features several walking trails that cater to varying levels of experience, so it’s ideal for families and outdoor enthusiasts - locals recommend parking at the Dam and walking the trail to the flag post for some beautiful sunset views.
