Germany is a land of storybook scenery, charming towns, and unforgettable landscapes. From mountain lakes to elegant palaces and hidden alpine villages, it’s a country that rewards slow travel and scenic exploration.

Whether you’re dreaming of a tranquil escape in Bavaria, a Black Forest retreat, or castle-hopping through the heart of Europe on the Romantic Road, we’re here to inspire you. Carefully curated by our DW Travel experts, here are the most beautiful places in Germany to visit on your fairytale German package holiday.

Tegernsee, Bavaria

Just an hour south of Munich, Tegernsee is a jewel of the Bavarian Alps. Suffice it to say, if you dream of clear mountain air and sparkling lakes, a trip to Tegernsee delivers in spades.

This peaceful retreat is known for its crisp blue waters, forested hills, and picture-perfect spa towns. It’s where stylish Münchners escape the city, offering hiking, sailing, and alpine wellness retreat - and where you can hike, paddleboard, or simply unwind with a view.

When to visit

In summer, expect wildflower meadows and refreshing swims, giving way to spectacular autumn colours. In winter, it’s all snow-covered rooftops and cosy alpine lodges.

Neuschwanstein Castle

While we’re discussing Bavaria, we couldn’t fail to mention Neuschwanstein Castle! No list of Germany’s most beautiful places would be complete without this iconic castle, built in the 19th century by the eccentric ‘Swan King’, King Ludwig II.

Perched dramatically in the Bavarian Alps above the village of Hohenschwangau, Neuschwanstein looks like something out of a fairytale - and it was, quite literally, the inspiration for Disney’s Cinderella castle!

When to visit

Visit in winter for a picturesque, snow-dusted scene. Plus, keep the magic going with trips to traditional Christmas markets like the Advent Market in nearby Fussen, held in the monastery courtyard, or the Christkindlmarkt in Munich’s Marienplatz.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

If you’ve ever seen a photo of a cobbled street lined with medieval houses and colourful shutters, chances are it was Rothenburg. This perfectly preserved town in Franconia looks like it’s been frozen in time.

Its cobbled streets, timber-framed buildings, and turreted walls are a dream for photographers and history lovers. It’s part of the popular ‘Romantic Road’ through southern Germany, which includes Neuschwanstein Castle along with tons of other beautiful Bavarian sights and fairytale castles.

When to visit

Spring and early autumn (April - June or September - October) are ideal for mild weather and fewer tourists if you’re planning on travelling along the entire Romantic Road. And, of course, December is magical if you’re here for the winter markets.

The Black Forest (Schwarzwald)

With dense woods, rolling hills, cuckoo clocks and (of course) the region’s eponymous cherry cake, the Black Forest is quintessentially German. It’s the origin of so many fairytales - and it’s easy to see why. Ancient pine forests stretch across the hills, hiding villages of half-timbered houses, thermal spas, and old-world charm.

Explore some of the region’s dramatic hiking trails, and thermal spas. We’d recommend incorporating a visit to Baden-Baden for spa-town wellness with a touch of glamour, while Triberg’s waterfalls and clock museum keep things delightfully quirky.

When to visit

The Black Forest is lovely at any time of year, especially in the fresh green of spring, but we think autumn here is something special, with golden leaves, morning mist, and the smell of woodsmoke in the air.

Moselle Valley

Less famous than the Rhine but arguably more charming, the Moselle Valley is a hidden gem. The river curves gently through hillsides lined with vineyards, where Riesling grapes thrive.

Towns like Cochem and Bernkastel-Kues are the definition of German chocolate-box towns - they feel like living postcards, with cobbled streets, timber houses, and castles overlooking the valley.

When to visit

A relaxed late spring river cruise along the Moselle is perfect for a romantic getaway, and the region is ideal for a relaxed road trip - especially in the grape-harvest season from late summer to early autumn.

Saxon Switzerland National Park

Don’t let the name fool you - Saxon Switzerland is firmly in eastern Germany, and found near Dresden, not Switzerland. This national park is a haven for hikers, climbers, and photographers, with towering sandstone cliffs, deep ravines, and panoramic views over the Elbe River.

The Bastei Bridge is the star of the show – a 19th-century stone walkway set between towering rock formations, offering panoramic views that feel fantastical, and almost prehistoric in scale.

When to visit

Late spring to early autumn (May to October) is ideal for hiking and clear views, with autumn especially offering striking foliage and fewer crowds.

Lake Königssee

Deep, silent, and impossibly clear, Lake Königssee is like something from a dream. Its emerald-green waters reflect dramatic cliffs and alpine peaks, and the iconic red-domed chapel of St. Bartholomä sits calmly at its shore.

Nestled in the Berchtesgaden Alps near the Austrian border, the locals are intensely proud of the clean, clear waters and the sense of peace here. Sheltered by the surrounding cliffs, even the boats are quiet – since 1909, only electric-powered boats, rowing boats and pedal boats have been allowed to preserve the serenity.

When to visit

Summer (June to September) is perfect for boat trips and alpine hiking. Winter offers peaceful snowy views and fewer visitors, though boat service is more limited.
