The best time to visit Bali depends less on the weather than on the kind of holiday you want. Bali is warm all year, but rainfall, swell, and visitor numbers shift constantly, changing the island’s character month to month.

Getting the timing right means matching the season to what you want from a holiday to Bali, whether that is beach days, diving, a honeymoon, or a trip built around school holidays.

Bali runs on two seasons rather than four. The dry season stretches roughly April to October, driven by southeast trade winds that bring sunny days and calm seas on the west coast.

The wet season covers November to March, with rainfall peaking in December and January. The term “wet season” can be misleading, though: rain tends to arrive as short, heavy downpours in the late afternoon rather than settling in for the day, so mornings are usually clear regardless of the month. The reward is lusher scenery, quieter roads, and lower hotel rates, aside from a sharp price and crowd spike over Christmas and New Year.

Best for beach holidays: May to September

The heart of the dry season is hard to beat for beach time: reliable sunshine, calm seas, and dependable crossings for day trips to Nusa Penida and the Gili Islands. July and August are the busiest weeks of the year, so late May, June or September deliver much the same weather with fewer people on the sand.

Best for surfing: year-round, depending on the coast

Surfers have more flexibility here than the season names suggest. Dry-season swell favours the west and south coast breaks around Uluwatu, Padang Padang, and Canggu, while wet-season swell shifts east, making Sanur, Nusa Dua, and Keramas the better bet.

Beginner-friendly breaks at Kuta and Legian work well year-round.

Best for diving: April to October

Visibility is clearest during the dry season, when calmer seas make the Nusa Penida crossing more comfortable. Manta rays are present at Manta Point most of the year, but sightings are most consistent from April to October.

Mola mola, the oceanic sunfish Nusa Penida is known for, appear on a narrower window, peaking around August and September, so build a trip around those months if that sighting matters to you.

Best for families: aligning with UAE school holidays

For families working around the UAE summer break, this window lines up neatly with Bali’s dry season, giving reliable weather for pool days, rice terrace walks, and gentler beach breaks.

The trade-off is that it overlaps with the island’s busiest, most expensive stretch. Families with more flexibility, particularly around Eid or a spring half-term, will find April, May, or early June a quieter, better-value alternative, with weather nearly as dependable.

Best for honeymooners: April to June, or September

Couples looking for a more romantic pace tend to do best in the shoulder months either side of peak season, combining dry-season weather with thinner crowds at spa resorts, clifftop restaurants, and sunset viewpoints in Uluwatu, without July and August pricing.

Best for rice terraces and cultural sightseeing

For classic Bali scenery over beach or dive conditions, look to the rice terraces around Ubud and Jatiluwih, most vividly green from February to April and golden during the harvest windows in April to May and October to November.

Balinese Hindu culture is also visible year-round through Galungan and Kuningan, twin festivals celebrated twice within each 210-day calendar cycle, when temples and homes are decorated with tall bamboo penjor poles.

The dates shift each year, so there is rarely a bad time to catch one.

One date worth building your trip around: Nyepi

One date that deserves special attention is Nyepi, Bali’s Hindu Day of Silence and Balinese New Year. For 24 hours the island stands still. No traffic, no flights in or out, shops and beaches closed, and guests asked to stay within their hotel grounds.

In 2027, Nyepi falls on 8 March, though the date shifts each year, so check it against your dates if flying in or out around early-to-mid March. The days either side are memorable, including the Ogoh-Ogoh parades the night before, when villages parade huge, handcrafted demon effigies through the streets, but it is not a day to plan arrivals, departures, or excursions around.
